REVIEW: Lawrence Yep is a well-known proper name in the annuals of juvenile literature. Nonetheless, this was the kickoff book that I accept read by this author. I enjoyed the story and was touched by the interaction of the father and the son. It was interesting to read about Angel Island since what well-nigh people know nigh is Ellis Island. The measures that the American government implement to track the lives of Chinese-American have provided a wealth of information for researchers. NOTE: It would take been dainty to have learned more than near the poems etched into the walls at Affections Island. And a guide to he Chinese characters at the outset of each chapter would have been welcomed.
Favorite Part: The affiliate chosen "Hopeless" pages 66-79 when father and son make a connection.

This is a office of history that likewise many Americans do not know.
This book is an first-class example of historical fiction. The author used the interrogation records of his begetter, Gim Lew, grandpa, and uncles to piece together this story. In the back of the book is an excellent recount of the history within this volume and actual photos from the family. Information technology feels like an accurate retelling of what likely happened.
This is definitely a volume I would apply in the classroom. I would love to discuss this volume in modest groups and every bit a class. The writing is suitable to a 4th or fifth grader, but as MN standards for 5th grade include government, this would be an excellent volume in fifth grade. I would love to take children detect when someone in their family immigrated to America and have them write a letter home in that person's perspective or tell a story like this one (though obviously shorter). This volume showed how we can connect with the by.
